Baby Names

The name you give to your baby is important; we certainly do not have to remind you of that! It is the name that is going to follow her throughout life. The name that will define her. The name that will become a part of who she is. It is a huge responsibility. And, with so many options to choose from, how can you possibly know that you are making the right choice? Well, you can’t. But, with the help of our tips and baby name suggestions, you might be a little closer to selecting the perfect one.

How to Pick Baby Names

Working your way through a massive baby names book. Spending hours sifting through suggestions online. Naming your baby after a beloved family member. Choosing a famous actor or musician as a namesake. Yes, there are plenty of ways to pick baby names. There is no ‘better’ way, per se. All that we can tell you is that when you find ‘the one’, you will know!

Until you do, however, here are some helpful tips to keep in mind:

  • Get Daddy on Duty:

Both mom and dad need to do their research. We recommend compiling a list of your top names (perhaps a top 10) and then sitting down to compare. If there are names that you both love (or at least like), write them down separately. Keep doing this until you have a top 10 list of names that you both find pleasant. From there, choosing the final one shouldn’t be all that difficult.

  • Wait Until D-Day:

If you are having trouble choosing from your list of names, it sometimes helps to wait until your little one is born. Usually, seeing their sweet face and getting to know their unique personality can help tremendously when it comes to making that big decision.

  • Investigate Meanings:

If you find that you have fallen into a cycle of turning down names and are no closer to finally choosing one, why not try to pick one according to its meaning? For example, while your partner’s favourite, ‘Abigail’, might not strike too much of a chord in you to start with, knowing that it means ‘beautiful’ and ‘a father’s joy’ just might change your mind.

  • Too Many Cooks:

While it may seem tempting to turn to friends and family for help when you cannot seem to find the right name, this can often be a recipe for disaster. Sometimes they will hate the top three names that you have picked, causing you to doubt them yourselves. Sometimes they will push for one that you are not sure about. At the end of the day, too many cooks spoil the broth… and the baby naming process!

  • Do Not Rush:

When it feels as though you have been desperately searching for a name for what seems like forever, do not rush into a decision just to get it over with. Your child’s name deserves the extra attention, and you will feel absolutely wonderful when you finally find one that fits. It will be worth the additional time, research and anxiety – trust us!

  • Simplify Matters:

Often, you will find a few names that you adore, but you and your partner just cannot agree. In these instances, bargain with one another. Let one partner choose the first name and the other the second name. Switch it up when you decide to have another baby. That way it is fair!

  • Do Not Panic:

Even as your due date creeps closer and closer, do not let the lack of a name scare you too much. You will find one. Nobody has ever gone through life nameless before, after all.
